Water Sports
There are plenty of water-based activities
including fishing, sailing, wind-surfing and para-sailing.
The constant trade winds create perfect conditions for windsurfing
and sailing. A low-wake area has been established on Ambergris
Caye for the safety of swimmers and snorkelers.
Fishing
Ambergris Caye is a renowned fishing destination
and Fishing is still a way of life on San Pedro. Charters
are available for full or half-days. Boats range in size
from small skiffs to larger, well-equipped "war-wagons".
Deep-Sea Fishing is a year round sport off Ambergris Caye. Just a half mile offshore, past the barrier reef, the water depths plunge quickly to well over 1000 feet. The generous food supplies of the reef and the outer atolls combined with deep water make for sport fishing at its best. Marlin is plentiful twelve months of the year. Sail fish are usually best in early spring and the King Mackerel is best in late spring. The best time to catch Wahoo is during the winter months. The 52' Sea Boats will keep you in comfort while you fish the exciting waters off the coast of Belize. If you like, the tuna or mackerel you land will make for an excellent dinner back at the resort.
Reef Fishing - The barrier reef that hugs the shore along Ambergris Caye means that your ride to the fishing spots are just minutes away. The waters inside and just outside the reef are teeming with Snapper, Grouper, Jack, and Barracuda . Snapper, Jack, and Barracuda are caught in large quantities year round and the best season for Grouper is during the winter months. Experienced guides will amaze you with their knowledge of the right baits and lures, when, how, and where to cast, and most importantly tips on how to make sure that the big one doesn't get away. Pull ashore on a deserted strip of beach to grill your catch over an open fire for lunch.
Fly Fishing - Because Belize is still largely unknown, saltwater fly fishing aficionados have the run of some of the largest tarpon flats outside of Florida (over 200 square miles). It is quite common for you to be the only angler in sight for days on end.
Bone and Flat Fishing - Head towards the flats on the western side of the island in search of the perfect prize awarding bonefish, tarpon or permit or maybe that grand slam awaits you this day. Weather permitting the novice or the pro will meet the challenge desired for a battle. At the end of the day smiles will signal satisfaction with a well fought battle in the flats.
The leeward side of Ambergris Caye is home to a system of estuaries and the corresponding flats which are home to incredible numbers of Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit. The best season for Tarpon is May through November. Bonefish and Permit are caught in the lagoons year round. You can expect Bonefish up to 6 pounds, Permit between 5-30 pounds, and Tarpon in the 40-80 pound range.
