Ambergris Caye On The Water

There are plenty of water-based activities including fishing, sailing, wind-surfing and para-sailing. The constant trade winds create perfect conditions for windsurfing and sailing.  A low-wake area has been established on Ambergris Caye for the safety of swimmers and snorkeler's.

Fishing

Ambergris Caye is a renowned fishing destination and Fishing is still a way of life on San Pedro. Charters are available for full or half-days. Boats range in size from small skiffs to larger, well-equipped "war-wagons".

Deep-Sea Fishing is a year round sport off Ambergris Caye. Just a half mile offshore, past the barrier reef, the water depths plunge quickly to well over 1000 feet. The generous food supplies of the reef and the outer atolls combined with deep water make for sport fishing at its best. Marlin is plentiful twelve months of the year. Sail fish are usually best in early spring and the King Mackerel is best in late spring. The best time to catch Wahoo is during the winter months.

Reef Fishing - The barrier reef that hugs the shore along Ambergris Caye means that your ride to the fishing spots are just minutes away. The waters inside and just outside the reef are teeming with Snapper, Grouper, Jack, and Barracuda. Snapper, Jack, and Barracuda are caught in large quantities year round and the best season for Grouper is during the winter months.

Fly Fishing - Because Belize is still largely unknown, saltwater fly fishing aficionados have the run of some of the largest tarpon flats outside of Florida (over 200 square miles). It is quite common for you to be the only angler in sight for days on end.

Bone and Flat Fishing - Head towards the flats on the western side of the island in search of the perfect prize awarding bonefish, tarpon or permit or maybe that grand slam awaits you this day. Weather permitting the novice or the pro will meet the challenge desired for a battle. At the end of the day smiles will signal satisfaction with a well fought battle in the flats.

The leeward side of Ambergris Caye is home to a system of estuaries and the corresponding flats which are home to incredible numbers of Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit. The best season for Tarpon is May through November. Bonefish and Permit are caught in the lagoons year round. You can expect Bonefish up to 6 pounds, Permit between 5-30 pounds, and Tarpon in the 40-80 pound range.

Experienced guides will amaze you with their knowledge of the right baits and lures, when, how, and where to cast, and most importantly tips on how to make sure that the big one doesn't get away. Pull ashore on a deserted strip of beach to grill your catch over an open fire for lunch.

Sailing

Sailing tours can be arranged with local guides. Often with lunch being a beach barbecue. Sailing trips usually last the entire day and encompass a tour around Ambergris Caye as well as other nearby cayes such as Caye Chapel and Caye Caulker.

Sail To Caye Caulker on a Belizean wooden sailing boat with it's laid back and charismatic Captain! Sail through aquamarine waters while the magnificent frigate birds soar overhead.  What a way to reach your  destination!

Approximate time is 2 hours on Caye Caulker to explore the island and have lunch. Two to three snorkel stops, including Coral Garden, Shark/ Sting Ray Alley, Hol Chan Marine Reserve and others.

Sailing & Snorkeling is something you will never forget. How about a half day to Shark and Ray Alley to snorkel and swim with the sharks and stingrays. These creatures are friendly and quite used to people. It is a memorable adventure.

How about a SUNSET cruise? Sunset is one of the most spectacular times on the island as blue skies give way to a lavender backdrop of the island. Everyone from honeymooners to retirees can good food, live music and drinks as they cruise along the east side of Ambergris Caye. By the time you return, relaxed and rejuvenated, you will be ready for the all that the Ambergris Caye night has to offer at night.

Parasailing
For visitors who want to venture beyond a tranquil Belize hotel or Belize resort during their stay, parasailing offers the chance to experience the Caribbean scenery in an adventurous and unique way.

The parasail rises to 400 feet above the boat and gives riders a spectacular view of the Caribbean and Barrier Reef, Ambergris Caye's white sand beaches and the quaint Belize hotels and Belize resorts on the shore. Single, tandem and triple rides last about 15 minutes.

Kite Surfing, Sailboards & Sea kayaks are also available. Kitesurfing or kiteboarding is a cross between wakeboarding and windsurfing. The rider uses a large powerful traction kite to skate across the top of the water and boost 20-30 ft jumps. Ideal conditions are 10-20knots of wind and flat shallow water - all of which Ambergris Caye has in abundance. Lessons are available.
