Gales Point is a Small Creole Fishing & Farming community ....

Gales Point is a laid back Creole village built along 2 miles of narrow peninsula, less than ¼ mile, jutting into Belize's Southern Lagoon. Gales Point Village is located along the coast between Belize City and Dangriga, with a population of around 500.

Manatee Lodge is located at the very end of the peninsula. This is a peaceful spot and the center of activity for many visitors to the area. The grassy grounds stretch out to the waters edge on three sides; a long dock is offered for swimming along with use of their Kayaks for their guests. Nearby resides Emmet Young, a well known drummer and drum maker. Drumming lessons are popular with visitors

Also making their homes in the Gales Point area are large numbers of manatees and endangered hawksbill and loggerhead turtles.

Gales Point Manatee Sanctuary
was created by the residents to protect the manatee and develop conservation-oriented tourism and today the lagoon is home to one of the region's largest manatee populations. Also known as “sea cows” these gentle animals are best viewed while floating along side in a boat or canoe.
The area also provides important nesting beaches for the Hawksbill turtle.

Turtle Spotting
Two species of endangered turtles, the hawksbill and loggerheads, arrive in large numbers every year to nest on the beaches of Manatee Bar, located at the mouth of the Manatee River. The latest estimates indicate that up to 12,000 hatchlings survive to populate the Caribbean from Gales Point annually.

Village resident guides provide trips
to Manatee Lagoon, Bird Caye, Ben Lomond Cave, as well as river canoe and hiking excursions. Other options include night crocodile spotting and lagoon fishing. The lagoon boasts a wide variety of fish, including tarpon.

Getting There...

Private Vehicle
Drive the Coastal Highway (Manatee Road) from La Democracia, mile 31 off the Western Highway, or you can get there from Dangriga, located 25 miles to the south.

Boat
Many visitors arrive by boat from the Belize City as part of coastal tour. Manatee Hole is home to about 50 manatees.
