For those looking
for a new way to experience the rainforests
and the cultural heritage of the Maya people
....
The
Home Stay Program represents Indian families that
would enjoy a low-key, intimate, people-to-people, cultural
experience. It's a low cost no frill, off beat, hands on
experience which includes an overnight stay with a host
family in a Kekchi or Mopan Maya Village.
Participating villages have constructed small thatched
roof guesthouses with separate bath and out house. Local
guides will escort visitors through jungle trails and explain
how the villagers grow and harvest their food and medicinal
herbs.
Opportunities
to participate in activities include: Cooking corn
tortillas over a fire hearth, grinding shucking corn, splitting
firewood, machetting a new milpa, harvesting coffee and
cacao beans, threshing rice stalks and washing laundry on
stone slabs. These are some of the activities that make
up the regimen of daily Maya life. If you timings right,
their may also be opportunities to observe local religious
and cultural celebrations as well.
Typical Guesthouse accommodations
have thatch roofs and include bunks with mosquito net, hammock,
oil lamp, purified water. Interested visitors can contact the program office at telephone
+501-722-2096, or email at ttea@btl.net .
