Visitors may start their sightseeing near the airstrip at a little green oasis called the The Caye Caulker Belize Tourism Industry Association's Mini-Reserve & Resource Center. Interpretive trails occupied by blue land crabs and small geckos on this little patch of littoral forest weave past gumbo limbo trees and other foliage.
Tours from Caye Caulker take you to visit these docile creatures,
in their natural habitat. Manatees are found in a
number of areas in Belize, however Swallow Caye off Belize
City nearly always has a good concentration of them.
- A quick 40 minute speed
boat
ride gets you to Swallow Caye to
watch the manatees and
where a knowledgeable guide informs you about the behavior
of these gentle sea creatures. Next boat to Goffs Caye.
This unspoiled little caye has great snorkeling. You can
snorkel from the beach, or relax up against a coconut
tree.
Mangrove and forested areas near
the airstrip are good place to get in some birding. More than 190 species of birds resident and migrant birds have been identified
on Caye Caulker, some of which are rarely seen elsewhere.
The white-crowned pigeon, rufus-necked wood-rail, and black
catbird are commonly seen here.
Other creatures may be encountered
on these nature walks, such as the saltwater crocodile.
Located on the northern most 100 acres of the island,
this area was declared a Reserve in May,1998. Miles
of reef, grass flats, lagoons and mangroves are now part
of this protected forest and marine reserve system.
Prior to Hurricane Hattie in 1961, this area was used
as a coconut plantation. Since the hurricane's devastation
the plantations have been inactive, allowing the native
flora and fauna 40 years to regenerate. Today, guided birding
and ecology tours can be arranged to visit the Reserve.
Tours leave Caye Caulker by boat
to visit the Maya archeological sites of Altun
Ha and Lamanai,
or travel inland to Caves
Branch for an underground float trip. While you're there, experience a jungle Zip-line
Canopy Tour.
