Caye Caulker On The Water

Although the Caye Caulker pace is slow you can splash into a variety of water sport activities. Sailing, Kayaking and Sport Fishing along with
Diving and Snorkeling are top pursuits. Caye Caulker is only a five minute boat ride away from the reef.

Sport Fishing

Caye Caulker is s good a place as any for a neophyte to catch their first fish. Flats, reef and offshore fish are plentiful. Licensed boat operators offer half- or full day trips for bonefish permit, tarpon, snook, snapper, barracuda, jacks and other species.

Blue water fishing grounds have gained in prominence after recent outstanding catches. The record Belize blue marlin (492 pounds) was landed between St. George's Caye and Caye Caulker in 1997.

Just off Caye Caulker are some grass flats, a popular spot for fly fishing to catch bonefish, tarpon and barracuda. On the other side of the reef, drop a line for some grouper, snapper, jacks or barracuda. In the blue, troll for the same and get ready for some of the really big ones like sailfish, kingfish, marlin, bonito and pompano.

While most guides provide equipment it is recommended that you bring your own gear if possible.

Sailing

Daily sailing trips are available on locally crafted boats that Caye Caulker is famous for. Longer trips can be arranged to the outer atolls, Turneffe Islands, Glovers Reef or Lighthouse Reef. From the deck you may spot dolphins or manatees.

  • Half-day sail with a local licensed tour guide with 3 snorkel stops
  • Full day to sail to Hol Chan - Includes 3 snorkel stops
  • Sunset cruise 5pm to 8pm.
See the sun set and moon rise. Rum punch on board
  • Overnight Sail - Follow the islands down to English Caye and snorkel as you go ....

Sea Kayaking

Double kayaks are available for rentals on Caye Caulker. Take an hour or two to circle the south main island of Caye Caulker. Take a few more hours and paddle to the northern point of Caye Caulker. Stop at the Mini-Reserve. Relax and go for a swim.

Explore the mangroves. The careful observer will spot many of Caye Caulkers resident and migratory birds. More then 100 species have been identified. Many species of fish, including the mysterious seahorse, live among the dense mangrove root system that offers food and protection.

Waterproof bag, snorkel bag, backrest and coolers are available with your rental.

Wind Surfing

For most of the year, Caye Caulker has a robust east wind blowing, making it an ideal place for wind surfing. The cove on the lee side of Caye Caulker is excellent for the beginner or novice to develop the skills and confidence to jump waves along the reef.

A large number of avid wind-surfers have arranged their lives to spend several weeks or months here each year. Others come as novices, learn to wind surf and join them. Unfortunately windsurfing rentals are hard to come by on Caye Caulker so it's best if you can bring your own gear.

Swimming

Swimmers can enjoy the clear water off any of the piers on the reef side of the caye, however most prefer the sandy white beach on the "split," a channel dividing Caye Caulker in half that was created by Hurricane Hattie in 1961.

For a change of pace, try swimming at the south end of the Caye. Bring a mask and snorkel. There are many colorful anemones, sponges, gorgonian's, and large numbers of fish among the mangrove roots.
