Placenica Fishing, Kayaking & Sailing
Fishing in Placencia is a year-round sport.
Inside or outside the reef, sea or lagoon, fly fishing,
spin casting, trolling or deep sea fishing. Placencia has
been called the "Permit Capital of the World". The area
boasts recognition as "Grand Slam" territory for
fly fishermen.
Charter rates for one to two fishermen ranges from
$200 to $250 US per day for a boat and guide or you can
try the flats for about US$150 per day. Flats are sand or
coral bottomed, good for wading. Some rental
fishing gear is available but the serious angler should
bring his own.
You won't find flying bridges or "hi-tech" blue
water sport fishing in Placencia, but you will find fish,
and in good quantities. If you want to improve your angling
skills, this is a great place to learn.
Fishing ~ Outside Reef
A veritable "feast of fish" awaits anglers
outside the reef: Yellowtail Snapper, Nassau and Red
Grouper, Black, Yellow and Tiger Grouper, Barracuda, King
Mackerel, Wahoo, Serra Spanish Mackerel, Cubera Snapper,
Mutton Snapper, Black- and Yellow-fin Tuna, dorado, Skipjack Tuna
and marlin.
Trolling for bigger game fish like wahoo, tuna and dorado outside the Barrier Reef is on the rise.
Fishing ~ Inner Channel Cayes
Lots of good fishing for a wide variety of species
in between the reef and the mainland. Trolling inside the barrier reef for barracuda and king mackerel is very popular or fish the mangrove-waterways of Placencia Lagoon and the numerous rivers up and down the coast.
The best
fishing locations will vary depending on season, weather
and tides. The following areas consistently perform
well for specific species.
- Tarpum Caye: lots of bait fish usually in area
- look for tarpon, jacks and snapper
- Moho Caye: jacks, tarpon, yellowtail snapper,
King Mackerel, barracuda and bonefish
- Ranguana Caye: bonefish, barracuda, snapper,
crevalle jack
- Ranguana Caye to Pumpkin Caye: grouper,
tuna, wahoo
- Ranguana Caye to Gladden Spit: tuna, bonito,
jacks, king mackerel, marlin and barracuda
- Gladden Caye: bonefish
