Village Homestay ....
Experiential Learning at it's Best - (11 Days)

Village Homestay's place students in villages from where they can engage in a wide variety of research and community conservation activities working alongside the local population.

To see Belize and Guatemala in just 11 days, it is recommended to fly into Belize International Airport (BIA), situated on Belize's coast, view Belize's coastal areas, then work your way west through Belize's Cayo District, and onwards towards Guatemala's Peten and Coban regions, finishing off with Tikal and a short, stunning, low altitude airplane flight back to Belize International to conclude.

Sample Itinerary

DAY 1 Arrival, Caye Caulker

Arrive Belize International. - ½ hr transfer to Belize City water-taxi terminal in 15 passenger van. Transfer 1 hr via water-taxi to Caye Caulker.

Settle into beach side hotel. Afternoon tour of island, swimming. Slide Presentation on coral reef after dinner.

DAY 2 Caye Caulker

All day snorkeling to Hol Chan Marine Reserve (best large fish sighting in Belize, but very crowded and not recommended if cruise ships are in country) OR ....

All day sailing and snorkeling to various smaller reef sites, which have less large fish but far more coral diversity, and much less tourist traffic (preferable, in our opinion)

DAY 3 Belize Zoo, St Margaret's Village

Depart Caye Caulker via water-taxi back to Belize City - One hour transfer west to the Belize Zoo for a 2 hour tour, including a lecture on the importance of wildlife and habitat conservation in Belize.

Continuing 1 hour west and south to St Margaret Village and settle in to this mestizo village's well developed homestay program. Students spend the night singly or in pairs with host families.

DAY 4 Five Blues Lake National Park
All day tour of Five Blues Lakes, includes a day of hiking, caving, rock climbing and swimming in what many think is the most beautiful broadleaf forest park in Belize. This park is co-managed by the villagers and strives to be a model amongst community conservation projects. Spend one more night with host families.
DAY 5 San Ignacio, the Macal River

Transfer 2 hours north and west to San Ignacio Town (pop 10,000) situated on the Macal River. Settle in to campground or cabins
(will students be bringing their own camping equipment?). Transfer ½ hour upstream for a leisurely 2 hour paddle down the Macal River to San Ignacio.

Optional - In-stream lectures on tropical river ecology, the historic role of the Macal River during Belize's colonial past. Lots of time for swimming, R & R, etc.

DAY 6 Chisec, Coban

Transfer ½ hour to Belize's western border - Cross into Guatemala, then switch to a Guatemalan vehicle. Transfer 4 hours west and south through Guatemala's Peten forest, deep into the rainforests of Coban.

Settle into Chisec, a tiny traditional mayan village, and divide group into host families. Evening lecture on cultural sensitivity and environmental, economic and developmental issues faced by this village.

DAY 7 Chisec, Coban
All day tour of region in the company of this villages "tour guides"
(still very much in training). Tour nearby caves. Tour traditional mayan "milpa" plantations. Participate in food preparation with host families. Tour nearby streams in dugout log canoes - Optional Night walks.
DAY 8 Chisec, Coban
More of Day 7 with time for students to bond with host families in between.
DAY 9 San Andres, Flores, Peten

Depart Chisec and 3 hours back-tracking to Flores, within the Peten region. It's a picturesque Spanish colonial town situated on a tiny island in the middle of the lake.

We cross the lake in "lanchas" to settle into San Andres Village on the opposite shore with a cozy bed and breakfast run by the widow of an environmentalist "desaparecido". She has great stories of Guatemala's troubled past.

DAY 10 Tikal
All day tour of Tikal to ponder the works of the Mayans of the past. Tikal speaks for itself. Transfer back to San Andres for the night.
DAY 11 Rainforest Overflight, Return Home
One hour flight back to Belize International Airport in a small twin engine airplane, flying just over the treetops. Taking in Tikal, the rainforest, and tropical rivers from only a few thousand feet up is an experience all in itself. Transfer to international airline for return home or onward destination.
